I started university in 1994, with Netscape for web and elm for email. Then pine. By the time I started grad school in ‘98, Netscape was on its way out and cross-browser compatibility was a daily website-making consideration. It’s amazing how fast it all evolves.

Local dad spoke only Klingon to child for three years:

If the kid was only “starting to learn it” by the age of three, something’s wrong either with Klingon or with the dad’s speaking of it. If Klingon’s a language that has all of the properties of “natural” human languages, the kid should have started picking it up before he was a year old. The more I think about it, the more fascinated I get by this.

For the past 6 years, our small independent bookstore in Inman Square, Cambridge has been a place for books, community, and innovation. We now face a difficult hurdle in a difficult industry in a difficult economy: the store must move—or close.

Luckily, we found a better space (more books! room for events!) but we need the funds to make it happen. Maybe you’ve sold books when you’ve had a cash crunch — well, that’s exactly what we’re looking to do now, only on a bit bigger scale:

Ten days. Five thousand books.

That’s right — selling five thousand books in our inventory (of 19,000) will raise the cash we need to fund the move, hire staff, and set up bigger and better than before in a new location a few blocks away. (Don’t worry, still in Inman Square area, and we’ll bring the Chicken Machine with us.

Here’s how it works:

Buy certificates online via Google Checkout in handy $10 amounts.

Starting December 1, redeem each certificate for any book (priced at $20 or less — see what an awesome deal this is?) at the store or online.

We don’t have much time, so help us get the word out!

Czech photographer Vaclav Silha, who captured the scene of peaceful bathing hippos who turned on a crocodile that came too close to a mother and her calf, said:

“The incautious croc got too close to a female who had calves and the whole group gathered into a defensive circle around them. It was a strong message for the crook to clear off.

“I have absolutely no idea why, but the crocodile suddenly raced across the backs of the hippos. I think it might have panicked and thought it was a possible escape route. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

“It was the worst choice the reptile could ever have made and it was definitely its last.

“The island of hippos suddenly erupted with teeth and all I could see was the crocodile being repeatedly crushed in their huge mouths.”

Described as one of the most aggressive creatures in the animal kingdom, an adult hippo can apply several tons of pressure in a single bite.
